We look forward to an enthusiastic turnout for the National Capital Triathlon & Duathlon, held at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility on Mooney's Bay in Ottawa. It is a great venue for the event and it shortens those dreaded runs from swim to T-Zone and T-Zone to bike mount.

Look for the Super Sprint and the SwimCycle. Enjoy the stadium atmosphere, convenient parking and the great urban, traffic free courses. For you paddlers, we have the Canoe/Kayak Triathlon - a paddle-cycle-run event - back for another year in a great paddling venue. The Couples Challenge is for those couples who want to visit Ottawa on the Civic Holiday Weekend for sightseeing and exercise. There is lots to do and enjoy in the National Capital.

For you up and coming younger competitive triathletes, we have a treat for you too.  We are pleased to be once again hosting an Ontario Association of Triathletes (OAT) Draft Legal race - one that will be part of a national series. Stay tuned for more information on this development.

camp quality - "lifting the spirits of children with cancer"
We are pleased and proud to announce that Camp Quality is an Official Charity of the National Capital Triathlon & Duathlon. We encourage you to visit their booth on site. Some of the camp's kids and their advocates will be helping out at the Finish Line and at Water stations on the course, so say hi!

Camp Quality Eastern Ontario is a non-profit, volunteer organization that, in addition to our signature week-long camping experience, provides year-round support for children with cancer (receiving treatment or in remission) and their families. Check us out at www.campquality.org!

Our goal this year, is to see if we can raise enough money through the National Capital, to send at least one kid to camp. The cost of the camp is $1500 per child - and that is with all camp staff acting as volunteers. You can help by making a donation, or by providing your pledge support to one of the race participants.

Camp Quality Online Donations

  1. Donations can be made to the Camp Quality during the online entry process.
  2. The donation amount will be added to your entry fee.
  3. The amount in the donation box will be directed to Camp Quality on your behalf.

somersault junior program

We are proud to continue to develop the Somersault Junior Program in 2012.  This program is designed to encourage those 12 years and older to participate, by including 2 year categories in the Junior Champions Challenge, beginning at 13 & under, up to 18-19.  Athletes in these categories will feel comfortable in Somersault events, and are automatically ranked in the Junior Champions Challenge.

new para categories
With the 'Won with One' organization as our 'advisor' we have introduced 'Para' catefories at the Tri1. Tri2, Tri3, Tri4, Tri5, & Tri 6 levels.  We allow the participant's guide to enter at no cost.   Please forward the guide's entry information to us by email at terry@somersault.cva. You can get more information on these categories by going to http://triathloncanada.com/en/page.ch2?uid=ClassificationCategories.

student discount

Students born in 1988 or later, and enrolled in school during the 2011-2012 year, receive a 40% discount on the entry fee. just enter your birth date and the school you are attending to be eligible.
relays

Triathlon Relays are a fun feature of the National Capital. Get a threesome (or a twosome) together for some fun and fitness!

try a tri challenge
It's back - and its for anyone who has always wanted to "Try a Tri" or those who don't want to be too competitive. Mountain Bikes and Hybrid Bikes are welcome along with road bikes.

super sprint triathlon
This category and race is separate from the Try A Tri Challenge. The Try A Tri is intended for the first timer, or once a year novice, or recreational, participant. The Super Sprint race is geared to those who are more serious, and only want to go short and fast.

swimcycle

The SwimCycle is back this year. The SwimCycle consists of the swim and the cycle portion of the Olympic, or the Sprint Triathlons.  Those that enter these races, will be timed after the cycle leg. SwimCycle participants will start with the Triathlon participants, but will exit after the bike for the very short run to the Finish Line.

canoe & kayak triathlons
There are two divisions here: Canoe Tri, and Kayak Tri.  In the Kayak division, a participant completes the kayak, cycle, and the run solo.  In the canoe division, the participant has a partner of the same gender in the canoe portion of the tri, but completes the remainder of the event solo. We are excited about the canoe & kayak triathlons. We believe there are many who would like to join the triathlon scene, but would like to do it in their favourite sport; paddling - on top of the water instead of in it. The paddle will be up Mooney's Bay towards Black's Rapids to the 2Km turn around and back to the beach, where you join the other triathletes and duathletes on the cycle and the run.

the nineteen wet suit couples challenge and how it works
A Couples Team consists of one male and one female team member. Each team member enters either the Sprint or the Olympic Triathlon as individuals (you don't have to be in the same race).

The combined total of your finish places, in the race you each chose, determines the team score. The couple with the lowest team score is the Couples Challenge Champion.

To officially enter the Couples Challenge (you are already entered in your individual age category) you will obtain a Couples Challenge Score Sheet at Race Kit Pick Up, complete it and hand it in, after your race results have been posted, you will return to Race Kit Pick Up to complete the Couples Challenge Score sheet, with your race place results. Gold, silver, and Bronze Awards are then presented to the top 3 Couples Teams (those with the lowest scores).

The winning couple receives Nineteen Pipeline Wet Suits!

The Champions Challenge program is for those of you who participate in more than one Somersault Triathlon, Duathlon, or Canoe/Kayak Tri Series Race, and might be interested in seeing how you stack up against others in overall, gender, and age group categories in the Somersault Triathlon, Duathlon, and Canoe/Kayak Tri Series world.

Each 2012 Somersault Triathlon, Duathlon, and Canoe/Kayak Tri series races (except Try a Tri races) is part of the Champions Challenge. You automatically score points in the Champions Challenge if you enter one of the eligible races. Check out the Champions Challenge program at http://www.somersault.ca/championshipstri.htm.

championchip
timing - by sportstats

We use Sportstats ChampionChip Timing at all Somersault races.  This timing system requires that all participants wear a ChampionChip Bracelet on your ankle during the race.  This bracelet contains a computer chip that allows you to be timed.  No chip = no time or place. You are responsible for obtaining your ChampionChip Bracelet on race morning at the Sportstats Tent near the Finish Line.  Do this at least 30 minutes before your race - earlier is better!  Races will not be held up waiting for those who forgot their bracelet. You must return your ChampionChip Bracelet immediately after you cross the finish line.  You are responsible for the cost if it is not returned - and it is expensive.

your results - age as of December 31, 2012
Your personal results will be posted within 20 minutes of your finish. Check the results as soon as you can,. If you have finished in the top 3 in your age, weight, or relay category, go immediately to the Awards Table to claim your Award Medal 'Add On'. If you find mistakes in the results, go to the Sportstats van near the Finish Line and provide them with the information you think is correct.  Have the results people make changes before you leave the event site, because they may not be able to do it after race day.

Results will be posted at http://www.somersault.ca/results.htm the evening of the race.

race info updates
We will email 3 weekly National Capital Newsletters to participants, with the latest updates, prior to the race.  These newsletters are very important as they will identify  changes, answer your questions and recommend race day procedures that will make your event day a better one.  Please provide an accessible email address on your entry form if you wish to receive these Newsletters. You may want to use a personal email address rather than your work email, because many employers utilize filters that will not let the Newsletter through.
