Nestled in trendy Westboro Village, whose motto is “Find that special something, then stay for something special”... the “special” is the Ottawa River Triathlon and Duathlon.

The Ottawa River Triathlon/Duathlon is the first outdoor event of the triathlon season in Ottawa!

The event takes you along the shores of the Ottawa River, where the water is clean, the run is unique in its cross-country nature, and the cycle is traffic free on the Sir John A. MacDonald Parkway.

Whether you are starting off your season with the Try-a-Tri, will be part of a relay team, or choose to challenge yourself at the Olympic distance, there is an event for you.

As a courtesy to those of you who enter many Somersault events, who plan well ahead, or who are just thrifty, we have an early season entry fee discount program. The discount schedule is outlined below.

entry fee conditions
There are no refunds for any reason - this includes event cancellation or event changes. 

If you wish to switch distances within the event, there are no partial refunds if the event change request is to a less expensive event. There will be an additional charge if the change is to an event with a higher entry fee. You may use your dashboard to make these changes (up to 6:00 p.m. on the Sunday prior to the event).

There are no person to person transfers. 

Credit cards are accepted for online entries only, up to 6:00 p.m. on the Sunday PRIOR to the race.  Entries after that date, must be made at the Race Kit Pick Up time and location noted below and must be paid in cash.

entry drop off or mail in

If you do not wish to register online, you can fill out the online form (without submitting) by clicking “Enter Now” and printing it off. You may mail in or drop off to: Somersault Event Series, 1915 Sunland Drive, Ottawa, ON K4A 3T4. All dropped off or mailed in forms are subject to applicable HST plus a $5 + HST ($5.65) admin fee. Please be sure to add this to the entry fee. All cheques are to be made payable to “Somersault Event Series” and must be received a minimum of 10 days prior to the event.

student and senior discount
Students born in 1992 or later, and enrolled in school during the 2015-2016 year, receive a 10% discount on their entry fee. Please be sure to enter your school name to qualify for the student discount. Please bring valid student ID to Race Kit Pick Up.

Seniors 60+ receive a 10% discount on their entry fee.

late entries accepted on race weekend
We accept race weekend entries. After the online entry deadline has passed (the Sunday PRIOR to race day at 6:00 p.m.), participants may still enter at Race Kit Pick Up times and locations on race weekend.  The entry fees for race weekend entry are higher than the online entry deadline fee, and include a free 'Somersault Series' souvenir shirt (but not the event souvenir shirt) and while quantities last.  Late entry fees must be paid in cash. Email info@somersault.ca for entry fees and details.

You did it!  Once you finish your event and cross the finish line, you will receive your finishers’ medal!  Congratulations!

Race Winners*
The first place male and female solo winner of each race receives a merchandise prize. 
Please plan to attend the award presentations shortly after your race is over.

Top 3 Overall*
The first three overall finishers in each race - male and female - will be eligible to receive a gold, silver, or bronze lanyard, to attach to your finish medal.

Category Top 3 Finishers*
Each age category top 3 finisher, is eligible for a Gold, Silver, or Bronze 'Award Lanyard'. This 'Award Lanyard' can be attached to your finish medal and must be picked up on race day during the award presentations and then any time afterwards on race day, at the Awards Table.
*excludes Walkers, Wylie Ryan events, and Try-a-Tri events

Award Lanyard May Be Picked Up on Race Day
Check the official results to see if you finished in the top 3 in your category and then you may claim your 'Award Lanyard' at the Awards Table.

If you do not pick up your 'Award Lanyard' on race day, you may send a self-addressed, stamped envelope (regular postage one envelope/lanyard request), with a note indicating what event and lanyard you are claiming (gold, silver, or bronze), to 'Somersault', 1915 Sunland Drive, Ottawa, ON K4A 3T4, and one will be mailed to you.

souvenir t-shirt

T-shirts are unisex sizing. Click here for sizing information. If your entry is received on the Sunday prior to the event, you will receive a free event souvenir T-shirt at race kit pickup (sizes are not guaranteed). Late entrants will receive a free 'Somersault Series' souvenir shirt (while quantities last).

You are eligible for the souvenir shirt only if you attend one of the race kit pick up sessions to pick it up. If you do not pick up your race kit, you are not eligible for the souvenir t-shirt.  Please do not request a shirt after the event. 

tech shirt option
Tech shirts are sized by gender. Click here for sizing information. You can upgrade your souvenir event t-shirt to a high quality Tech T-Shirt for an extra $15, up to the online entry deadline. The Tech Shirt comes without the sponsor logos on the back so it makes a first class casual wear shirt. You are only eligible for the souvenir Tech T-Shirt if:

  • you upgrade to the Tech Shirt when entering online, and
  • you pick up your race kit by event day

official performance certificate
We are pleased to offer each race finisher, the opportunity to download and print an official certificate of their event performance, by Friday after the event. From the results page: somersault.ca/results.htm choose the 'type' of event you entered (run/tri/kids), then select the specific event distance in which you participated to access the race results as well as view the finishers certificate by clicking on the 'certificate' icon beside your name.

You can now ‘claim’ your results on the Sportstats page to gain access to your online performance certificate and any photos associated with the event.  Go to www.sportstas.ca.  Then, click on the ‘+’ sign, beside your name. You will have a choice of clicking on photo, certificate, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

You will LOVE the Somersault event finishers’ medals and can choose to complete your race day experience with a personalized iTaB add-on. post race refreshments
Enjoy a banana, a granola bar, and either eLoad or Scratch brand fluid replacement after the run. We will announce in the pre-event newsletter which particular brand we will be offering on race day for this event. The Muscle MLK Team will be on hand to cheer you on to the finish and provide a Muscle MLK* and a high five! (*to those 16 years of age and older).

sportstats timing 
We use ChampionChip Timing at all Somersault races. This timing system requires that all participants wear a ChampionChip band on their ankle during the race. This race band contains a computer chip that allows you to be timed.  No chip = no time.

You are responsible for obtaining your ChampionChip timing chip on race morning from the Sportstats Tent near the Finish Line.  Do this at least 30 minutes before your race - earlier is better!  Races will not be held up waiting for those who forgot their timing chip.

You must return your ChampionChip timing chip immediately after you cross the finish line.  You are responsible for the cost if it is not returned.

your results (age is as of December 31, 2016)
Results will be posted shortly after you finish the race. Please check the results as soon as you can, to be sure they are accurate. If there are discrepancies, go to the Sportstats van near the Finish Line and provide them with the information you think is correct. Please have the Sportstats Crew make any necessary changes on site as soon as possible in order to allow for award presentations to proceed.

Results will be posted in the results section at somersault.ca/results.htm within 24 hours of the race.

pre-race orientation session
We recommend that you attend the Ottawa River Triathlon/Duathlon orientation session. Meet with Geordie McConnell, founder of the Ottawa Triathlon Club (OTC) who will do a walk-through of the event(s) and answer all of your questions! Orientation is at 5:30 p.m. on Friday June 10th – meet Geordie on site (the patio of the Ron Kolbus Centre) to begin the tour.  Meanwhile, if you have any questions, please email info@somersault.ca

Swim Course

The swim course is as described on the web site map.  The swim is a beach start.  Swimmers exit the water between the lime green "nineteen" buoys on the shore and have a short run to the transition zone.

Super Sprint/Try A Tri - 1 loop on the Parkway

Run Courses
The run is unique to an in-city run as it is cross country in nature.  But don’t be nervous – it’s gentle and grassy.  The route is a shared one, so please be courteous to your fellow competitors. There is a water station on the pier near the turn. The run distances are travelled on the same out course (some just a little further than others) and that turns around at each respective turning point and comes back on the same course as:

3km = 1 Loop (out and back to 1.5 km) - Try A Tri final run
5km = 2 Loops (out and back to 1.25 km) - Super Sprint Tri, Sprint Tri, and first Olympic Du Run
10km = 4 Loops (of 1.25 km) - Olympic Distance Tri & Duathlon final run

Important: 
To comply with existing pathway rules of use, the cycle portion of the triathlon & duathlon from the T-Zone to the Ottawa River Parkway will not be timed and will not be included in the final finish time. Participants are advised that while on the pathway, the 'normal' rules of pathway use apply to your cycling - including traveling at 20Km per hour or less, not use using aero bars, and cycling to the right of the centre line. Cyclists who fail to comply with these requirements will be disqualified by event officials.

If your kids, spouse, family members or friends are spectating why not volunteer them as officials/volunteers and let them have some fun too!  Email us ahead of time if you will help, so we can assign you - info@somersault.ca. You can also find out more on our Volunteer program page.

Clubs, teams and non-profit organizations are invited to inquire about our volunteer donation program - a donation in return for a group of members volunteering for the day.

We will email the latest news updates to participants prior to the race.  These newsletters are very important as they will identify  changes, answer your questions, and recommend race day procedures that will make your event day a better one. 

Please provide an accessible email address on your entry form if you wish to receive these Newsletters. You may want to use a personal email address rather than your work email, because many employers utilize filters that will not let the Newsletter through.
