A Runner's Race

Trail running has grown enormously popular in the past 5 years and many of our participants don’t even realize that we’ve had an epic trail run on the calendar for several years now!

The Cataraqui Trail is part of the Trans Canada trail network and in this section is runs along Sydenham Lake making it a quiet peaceful and scenic run. It’s also very flat, making it one of the fastest trail runs in the area.

For the triathletes, it’s a smooth fast transition from bike to run as you descend into transition and jump out onto the trail for a speedy run on packed gravel. We often get elite athletes showing up for this race because the bike is a challenge and the run is fast. It’s a small event but it’s also one of our most competitive.

Attack the Rollers!

We won’t lie…. the bike course is challenging. There are tougher bike courses in other races but this is definitely one of Somersault’s most challenging courses. It features a few steep climbs, and a number of rolling hills. The good news is the road is quiet and the pavement is in excellent shape.

A Swim for Spectators

Bringing the fam with you? The swim course is a triangular course just off Sydenham Point. Spectators can watch their favourite athlete from the picnic area on the point. They’re never too far out into the water so they can be seen the entire course. This makes it a unique course for triathlon from a spectator perspective.

Road Trip!

Coming from Ottawa? Take the backroads! You’ll find yourself driving through some beautiful and scenic areas!

Grab lunch in Sydenham or stop in Westport, a gem of the area. Make sure to stop in at the Foley Mountain Conservation area. You won’t be disappointed with the view!

Did You Know?

  • Founded in 2008, it's one of our youngest events!
  • It used to have a half-iron distance event, making it one of the few half-iron events to feature a trail run!
  • Features a half marathon trail run! One of the few in the area!
  • Despite the challenging bike course it was the fastest Olympic distance Somersault event in 2019 by almost 10minutes!

The Somersault Event Series is the pre-eminent event series in Eastern Canada consisting of triathlon, duathlon, and running events for all ages and abilities.
