The Smiths Falls Classic is a historic race for Canadian triathletes. It was the first swim/bike/run event to be held on Canadian soil and was started by two 17 year olds who wanted to compete in a new and unique event in their hometown of Smiths Falls.
This year’s event was the 40th edition and Somersault partnered with the town and several local businesses to create an experience worthy of the event’s rich history. This year’s edition saw an 18.5% increase in participation continuing the overall growth trend for 2019.
Renewed local interest in the race from the town and local businesses were key factors in some of this growth and Somersault is excited to continue to build and develop these partnerships in the coming years to bring the race back to its former glory and support healthy active lifestyles in Smiths Falls.
One of the most exciting features of this edition was the return of the original trophies, refurbished and named after the original organizers of the event, Andrew Comstock and Bernard Merkly. These incredible trophies are awarded to the top male and female finishers in the Sprint triathlon event and will have their names added to the trophy!
Even more exciting was having Bernard Merkly, one of the race founders, there to present the trophies to the winners!
Each year winners of the Sprint triathlon will have their names added to the trophies continuing to add to the history of this prestigious event.
A special thanks to Midway Sports and Trophies of Smiths Falls for refurbishing and preparing the trophies for the big day!
Many local businesses contributed to the success of the this event including SportX, Rideau Search and Rescue, Town of Smiths Falls, Smiths Falls Chamber of Commerce, 4 Degrees Brewing, Brock Zeman, DJ Rodney, Tweed, Midway Sports and Trophies, and Bakers Fries.
The Somersault Event Series is the pre-eminent event series in Eastern Canada consisting of triathlon, duathlon, and running events for all ages and abilities.
