Three Reasons to Try a Tri!

Endurance sport participation is one the rise! And there’s good reason for that! As a society we’re becoming more and more mindful of the choices we make about our health, from food to exercise, and there’s no better way to stay motivated and find purpose in your weekly exercise routine than friendly competition in organized events.

Somersault has always been a fun first event series and we strive to provide events that are suited to those who want to participate and have fun, those who want to compete for the top spot on the podium, and those who want both!

Triathlon is a great way to stay fit because it has a such broad range of physical demands. Each discipline of triathlon offers it’s own unique benefit to health and to your physical fitness.

The Swim

Swimming is an excellent low-impact cardiovascular exercise. It comprises a total body workout developing and maintaining muscle tone and strength from head to toe. Because there is such a strong focus on form and technique, swimming is an excellent way to get fit and engage your brain and motor functions. Swimmers have better body awareness, more flexibility, and better coordination than non-swimmers. It's impossible to master swimming technique, which means there's always ways to improve and build on your swimming performance.

The Bike

Cycling is one of the most popular of the endurance sports. It's low impact and has a high return on investment. Cycling engages your largest and most powerful muscles in your body but places very little impact on your joints. This means even a non-athletic person can ride a bike for hours at a time. Cycling is also a wonderful way to explore your city, town, country, etc at a moderate pace covering long distances with relative ease. Cycling encourages the secretion of hormones that slow the aging process, improve sleep quality, and alleviate depression.

The Run

Running is a relatively high-impact sport. But this isn't necessarily a bad thing! Because swimming and running are so low impact, it's important to engage in a high impact activity. Running strengthens joints and improves and maintains bone density. Aging runners, on average, are significantly less prone to osteoarthritis and osteoporosis than their non-running peers. Running and Walking are two activities that can be done with little specialized equipment, can be done almost anywhere, anytime, and have very few barriers to entry. Most people who participate in triathlon started out as runners. This makes it one of the most cost-effective cardiovascular activities in which you can partake.

Putting it all together

So why should you try a triathlon? Simple. Triathlon combines all three of these remarkable sports. You reap the benefits of all three. You get to meet other triathletes, but also engage with swimmers, cyclists, and runners. It's a bridging sport incorporating three different sport communities as well as its own dedicated triathlon community. But at the same time triathlon is an individual sport; even the introverts among us can find something in triathlon. Triathlon promotes a healthy active lifestyle. It engages your body in a multitude of ways providing participants with well rounded fitness. It can be as social or as isolated as you want. It allows you to engage your brain, connect with your body, and overcome your fears. It teaches you to push, it shows you your limits and allows you to push beyond them. You'll never be the same person again after your first triathlon!

Every Somersault Triathlon event has a Try A Tri. These short events make entry into the sport easier and less daunting. You can go as hard or as easy as you’d like.

The Somersault Event Series is the pre-eminent event series in Eastern Canada consisting of triathlon, duathlon, and running events for all ages and abilities.
